Succeeding The Spectrum, South Bend Campus Student began publication on January 12, 1968, with an eight-page issue heralding a student-arranged concert by The Turtles and announcing an addition to Northside Hall. A letter in the first issue from Indiana University President Elvis J. Stahr congratulated IU South Bend Student Government on their “ambitious new venture” and noted that while IU Bloomington students “changed the name of the student publication eight times in the first fifty years,” they always “retained ‘Student’ in the newspaper title.” IU South Bend would depart from this practice; by spring 1969, it was home to four student publications (including the nascent Preface), and only the Campus Student had student in the title. The Preface would replace it as the Student Government-supported campus newspaper in fall 1969.
