Abstract
  • Chancellor Lester Wolfson (far left) and Chancellor Sylvia Bowman (far right) converse at a dedication ceremony for the Northside West addition to Northside Hall in 1972. Lester Wolfson was the first chancellor of Indiana University South Bend, serving 1969 to 1987. Sylvia E. Bowman was the chancellor of the Indiana University regional campus administration from 1972 to 1974. Bowman was the first female chancellor of a Big Ten university. The limestone Indiana University Center opened in September, 1961, and featured an 800-seat auditorium with a fully equipped stage and large dressing rooms. It was officially retitled Northside Hall in 1966. The concrete-faced five-story addition known as Northside West was built in 1970 to 1972 to add classroom, laboratory, library and office space, as well as a 300-seat performance space for music and theater productions and large lecture classes.
