Abstract
  • Clayton Mark built the Clayton Mark Mausoleum to honor his wife Anna, who passed away in 1915. The granite is from the Mount Airy Quarry in North Carolina, the largest open face granite quarry in the world. The roof stone was cut in one piece, weighed approx. 44 tons and was a feat in granite hauling to transport via a special railroad car supported with 16 wheels. The quarrying, manufacturing, delivery, and assembling of the stones took years, and the mausoleum weighs approx. 160 tons. Clayton, Anna, and many members of the Mark family are buried in the Clayton Mark Mausoleum in the Lake Forest Cemetery, Lake Forest IL. photo credit: Stephanie Smith
