Description
  • Letter written in Rome on June 24, 1570. Signed by "Il Cardinale Aldobrandini." A modern hand associates this signature with that of Ippolito Aldobrandini (1536–1605), who became Pope Clement VIII in 1592. Ippolito, however, did not become a cardinal until 1585. This signature could instead be that of Ippolito's older brother, Giovanni Aldobrandini (1525-1573), who was made a cardinal on May 17, 1570. Evidence on dorse that the letter was once sealed with red wax.
