Description
  • Originally the outer leaves of a quinion, these conjoined leaves come from a sixteenth-century Spanish gradual. These leaves contain music for the September Ember Days, with chants for the Wednesday and Friday masses preserved here.

Foliation - Pagination: Contemporary medieval foliation in red Roman numerals in the rop right corner of each recto, reading "lxxxv" and "xcii". Catchwords: A partial catchword "cut", horizontal, in the center of the bottom margin on the final verso. Page dimensions (in mm): 516 x 391. Written area (in mm): 410 x 280. Script: Gothic. Script type: Rotunda. Layout: One column, ruled in lead for five lines of music and text. Decoration: Large puzzle initial at opening in red and blue with purple and red penwork, having suffered some water damage. At other chant incipits, a one-line cadelle letter and red initial with purple pen flourishing. Rubrication and line fillers in red. Musical notation: Square notation on five red-colored staff lines, with custos and barlines.

  • A pencil notation on the bottom outer corner of the recto leaf reads "41-2/31, SIBT, 700Pls, LAS DOS." Found in a music library office and moved into Special Collections in 2019. There is no record of when the item originally came to St. Olaf.
